January is thirteen events over eight days, and the shape of it is unusual: three separate 5K races in four weeks. The LCEC Run/Walk to Benefit United Way opens the year at Jim Jeffers Park on the 3rd, Apex Rewind follows at Rotary Park on the 10th, and the EE Exceptional Superhero 5K runs from Grace Church on the 24th.
The rest is small and local rather than large and ticketed. Rotary Park carries two free programmes in the month, a gardening series on the 10th and a Florida Friendly Landscaping class on the 30th. Four Freedoms Park has the Daddy/Daughter evening on the 10th and a line dance social on the 27th. Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve runs a guided kayak day tour on the 9th.
One practical note that holds all month: nothing here starts late. The three 5Ks go at 7:30am, 8am and 7am, the craft market at the Youth Center opens at 8am, and the Beach Blast family day starts at 9:30am. The evening events are the exception.

- Daddy/Daughter Date Night, Saturday 10 January, 6pm: Music, dancing, door prizes, catered appetizers and photo ops. Check the venue. The city files it under Four Freedoms Park but the listing says this year it was held at Lake Kennedy Center, 400 Santa Barbara Blvd. RSVP on (239) 574-0804.
